Introduction

Being mother absolutely is the most beautiful moment in your life but sometime it could be the hardest job in the world. Kids bring a lot of joyful and exciting things into mother's life. Unfortunately, they bring along many trouble and problem, too.

My little daughter is a nice and obedience girl. However, it happens with almost every baby girl, sometimes she pulls leaks at night. I wash her clothes every day, but the urine smell still remained after washing.

While I want to keep her clothes smelling fresh, I tried to change laundry detergent and even left my dryer door open to air it out. My house is still full of that smell! I know other moms must go through this irritating experience, too!

Why need to remove the smell from baby clothes?

The more hygiene clothes are, the more comfortable and happy children. If you want your baby's clothes to smell good and fresh as the baby, it is important to regularly wash baby clothes to remove the unwilling smell.

Of course, there is no perfect solution to easily get the bad smell out of baby clothes. However, there are lots of baby laundry skills and special laundry agent that help you to keep the baby clothes in the best shape and smell. Keep in mind that these baby laundry skills will make everything convenient for you.

Sunlight and Fresh Air

If you live in southern American, where almost every day is a sunny day, it should be the best option. I think it always good to use fewer chemical on baby's clothes.

Sunlight and fresh air are the excellent nature deodorizers. It dissipates the chemical odor and kills the bacteria. Remember that the urine smell comes from bacteria and chemical component. If you kill the bacteria and change the composition of this chemical odor at the source, the stinky smell should go away.

The Pros                                                                                      The Cons

- It is safer for baby sensitive skin and more friendly to the environment because the cleaning method does not use any chemical detergent and pretty much zero carbon hydro.

- You will need the sun, so this method does not work well on the rainy and misty day.

- It is free and easy to do. All you need is hang the baby clothes in the midday sun around 90 minutes and let the sun get the job done for you.

- Sunlight fades some colored fabric, so use caution with fragile fabrics. However, it should not be the big problem. I must constantly change infant clothing to keep up with their growing pace before its fabric color ruined by the sunlight.

 - Should place the baby clothes in the protected area, a bird can poop on your stuff.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an effective cleaning agent, odor neutralizer as well as a fabric softener. If you are looking for a cheap and natural way to get the pee smell out of baby clothes, one of the simplest ways is to mix baking soda with water and use on the stain to remove the smell.

The baking soda absorbs the bad smell and just wait for 30 minutes then you can vacuum it up.

Otherwise, if you are not able to wash the smelly baby clothes right away, try directly rub dry baking soda on the stained surface to remove the odor. The great things about baking soda are it totally harmless for baby. You can find some baking soda in many baking recipes.

The pros:                                                                                                            The cons

-It is cheap and nontoxic. The stuff can eat and not harmful to the baby skin.

- The only thing I do not like about baking soda is its sodium effect. According to Livestrong, a larger amount of sodium could lead to high blood pressure, heart disease. Besides, a high dose of baking soda can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

-It has multi-uses. Baking soda could also use as a cleaning agent as well as whitening fabric.

-It is easy to get. You can find baking soda in any convenient store or grocery store.

Plain White Vinegar

Plain white vinegar is a simple ingredient you can find in any household kitchen. It is surprising that vinegar also can be used in removing the urine smell from the baby clothes. In my experience, by using vinegar in the final rinse cycle, it completely strips all detergent and bad smell from baby clothing.

To have a better understanding how vinegar neutralizes the urine you can try pouring some into the toilet with urine and see how the smell changes. Similar to baking soda, vinegar is economic and nontoxic.

Another Option

Borax

Borax which also called sodium borate is the natural mineral that has so many applicants in the cleaning industry. You can find borax component from toothpaste to laundry detergents. Because of its sodium component, borax is strong and boost the cleaning power of all of the nature cleaners.

If other cleaning agents do not work well, Borax could be the natural alternative material to remove the pee smell from clothes. I tried borax sometime and it is as good as baking soda.

However, I personly do not recommend to use borax on baby clothes. It has strong chemical component and may not safe for baby sensitive skin.

The mixture

By doing some research and experiment, I have found out the mixture of baking soda, white vinegar, and sunlight could be one of the most effective ways to get rid of the stinky smell from baby clothes. It sounds simple but it works perfectly for me most of the time.

Step 1:  Do a prewash baby clothes with 1/2 cup of baking soda and cold water. Do not add any detergent. Baking soda will get rid of pee smell from kid clothing.

Step 2:  Use your baby detergent to wash baby clothes with your temperature.

Step 3:  Use vinegar in the final rinse cycle to cut out all the residual detergent agent s and the remaining bad smell of baby clothes.

Step 4: Hang the clothes in the hot sunshine and fresh air so UV rays can kill any bacteria and dissipates the chemical odor (if the odor smell still remains).

Final Thoughts

After years of doing laundry work for my babies, I have realized the laundry detergents do not always work. They can help but do not remove the stinky smell. There are still appropriate ways to perform these simple tasks. My recent research has enlightened me that you must choose the right equipment (baking soda, plain white vinegar, sunlight).

Sometimes, depends on the types and quality of baby clothes fabric, the urine smell may be tougher and harder to remove. To get a better result, you can try these above methods or the mixture of all.

PS: Keep in mind that the sooner you do the wash, the more effective to get the job done. Let me know if you try these tips and how it works for you!
